5 Key Benefits of Humor at Work

Humor is the ability to find things funny. In few people you can see the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech - I term it as Humor. It does not mean that person is not able to take and execute responsibility, or he is not sincere towards work.

I always kept practice of humor at my personal life and work place too... its God gift... I am thankful for that!

I am just putting few benefits of Humor at work place as below.

1. Reduces Stress:

Believe me Humor reduces stress. Let me give an example from what I observed from my home town Ratnagiri zilla (part of Maharashtra, India). It is a place famous for mangoes, especially alphonso mango. I saw there is a mechanism of plucking mangoes without damaging those and hence we are able to store those for longer time. One person climbs on the tall mango tree, he throws mangoes at the ground. Another person holding a cloth, just allows the mangoes to fall in the cloth and let it touch the ground then. It helps mango not to get damaged by falling directly on the ground. Humor is like that cloth is in your hand... how nicely you manage it to not to damage the mango, its skill! Just find humor in small & big situations, laugh or smile a bit... it helps!

2. Increases Productivity of Team:

As humor increases better cooperation between employees and teams, it helps automatically improve the productivity. Humor creates the space for employees to challenge and change old habits and obsolete procedures. It really helps to create a culture where team laugh at our mistakes and learn from them rather than yelling at each other, and it gives people the feeling of relaxation at workplace. When team feel more comfortable and safe, they work harder, faster and more productively. Team becomes more matured with time!

3. Improves Mental and Physical Health:

Laughter also increases immune cells and improves your resistance to disease. It triggers the release of endorphins which make you feel better and can even remove pain. Humor improves our physical health by releasing toxins and stress just through the act of relaxation. Just as it impossible to speak and listen at the same time, it is also difficult to stay stressed out while you are laughing. It’s hard to stay sad or continue being angry when someone or something makes you laugh. Hence not only can humor help your physical health, it can also do wonders for your mental and emotional well-being. Humor does this by dissipating negative or distressing emotions, because you can’t really feel two strong and opposite emotions at same time.

4. Increases Approach Ability:

In corporate life I have seen rude, bad, harassing vs humor aura of people. Almost all of the time team or anyone loves to communicate with person who is approachable and always smiley. Communication should not have fear, it should have smile and laughter. Its my experience that humor increased approachability among you and the team.

5. Humor makes you successful at work environment:

Many experts believe that humor is a key element to being successful at work. A Robert Half International study, quoted in Forbes magazine, found that 91% of executives believe a sense of humor is important for career advancement, while 84% feel that people with a good sense of humor do a better job. 🙂 See me and my team at GrassDew!
